Post-op Playtime

Here he is during his first real awake time.

And for those who wanted to see a close up of the fix:

This is apparently the only comfortable way to lay in Mommy's lap. He kept moving around and fussing until he got to this position. Then he stopped fussing and started falling asleep.

Another close-up

Sleeping more like a normal person.

Surgery

Nathaniel had his cleft lip surgery at Primary Children's Hospital.
He was in such a good mood before the surgery. He loves going to the doctor's because of all the cool things to look at and the awesome sounding paper. Hopefully he will still like going to the doctor.

Here he is in his hospital clothes. It had an open back like all hospital gowns.

He was really having fun with the paper.

Waiting for the surgeon.

We didn't get to go with him to have anesthesia or any thing so after this we went straight to the parent waiting room. It was a very nice room with cubicles that you waited in. Chris really liked it because it meant you didn't have to make awkward small talk with people whose children were in surgery. It was just Chris and I sitting and waiting. We waited for about an hour and forty-five minutes. It took a little bit longer than we thought because we didn't think to add in his going under and coming up. By the time we saw him again he was out from under anesthesia. He was still pretty groggy though and was in and out of sleep the whole time we were in recovery, which was good because we weren't allowed to hold him there and he had lots of wires and stuff so him moving wouldn't have been good because he is so strong.
On the way up to his room he kicked of his hospital anklet and one of his wires and tangled up a couple others. Once we got up to his room he mostly just wimpered as they took vitals and gave us instructions even though he hadn't eaten for 7 hours. We tried to feed him but the local anesthetic hadn't worn off so he couldn't move his lips to suck. That really frustrated him. So he did cry a bit then. But Daddy took him and helped him feel better. After that we got him to eat about an ounce of milk using a syringe. He still hasn't been able to breastfeed or bottlefeed. Then Daddy put him to bed.

He is conked out.

They even came in and took his vitals and he didn't wake up.

Chris was pretty tired too after being such a good Dad.

Random Videos of everyday life

After he eats we let him play with the leftovers.

He almost does more things with his feet than with his hands. He especially loves kicking faces.

As you will notice he still has camera face much of the time a camera is out.

4 Month Check-up

We had Nathaniel's 4 month check-up yesterday. It was originally for the 5th but we had to reschedule because the doctor was unexpectedly out of the office. Nathaniel is now 19 pounds 13 ounces and he is 27.75 inches long. That means he has officially doubled his birth weight and added almost 7 inches. His weight has been following the average growth curve pretty well (the first picture) but his length is just shooting up! He is going to be one tall little boy if he continues. If you follow the middle line which is the average height and weight for babies you will see that he is the average weight and height of a 9 or 10 month old. haha!

And that makes sense to me because he has out grown about half of his 6 month clothes now. Mostly he wears 6-9 month clothes with the occasional 6 month piece of clothing because that company runs large. He is also in size 3 diapers but I worry he is out growing those, too. It says they last until 28 pounds but he keeps blowing out and that is what happened last time we needed to go up a size. Maybe 28 pounds is for a shorter baby. Or maybe he is just blowing out because he wants too. : )

He is working very hard, trying to crawl. He moves his legs and arms but hasn't figured out how to get his belly up.

He also LOVES to eat. Daddy is still the one who feeds him solids the most but occasionally Mommy gets too. He has reached the point where he really likes to play with his food too. I think he likes the squishy feeling. And he likes to bang his bowl and spoon on the tray.

Oh, no! I made a mess!

Happy Father's Day!

 Nathaniel says:
Happy Father's Day!
He has had a great time hanging out with Chris today. They have been being all sorts of rough and tumble.

He and Chris wore their matching ties to church.

Chris got his favorite storybook for Father's Day. It's called Big Plans and it's about a little boy and his big plans. He and Nathaniel read it right away.
We also went to Red Robin yesterday for Father's Day. Chris got a big burger! Afterwards we walked around the mall and Chris bought Nathaniel a jingle bells. Nathaniel loves it.

Rolling Over

So I didn't get Nathaniel's first two rolls because they were kind of out of the blue. He wasn't rolling toward anything. He was so upset he just rolled himself over. And I didn't get the third because I didn't know he could do it intentionally yet. However.... This is the 4th time he rolled over!

He definitely knows how to roll over now though. He rolled over 6 times in one hour this morning. And he just rolled over in his sleep. To me that is a definite sign he has achieved rolling over. haha

4 Months

Nathaniel is 4 months!

Some of his favorite things are singing with us, chewing on anything, his rattles and eating. So far his favorite food is mugicha or sweet potatoes. It's a hard decision.
He is perfectly fine to sit and play on his own but once he gets tired all he wants is to be held. That includes sleeping itself. He does not like to sleep alone.
He likes to roughhouse with Daddy. He flies like an airplane and bounces on Dad's legs.
His defining feature is that he is ALWAYS drooling!

Nathaniel's Top 20

We thought we would give you a taste of Nathaniel's taste in music. These are his favorite songs. They generally stop him from crying for the duration of the song or a good chunk of it. He also likes country and classical but we didn't include any of those because he doesn't show particular interest in any one, he just quiets down when they are on and falls asleep.
