Surgery

Nathaniel had his cleft lip surgery at Primary Children's Hospital.
He was in such a good mood before the surgery. He loves going to the doctor's because of all the cool things to look at and the awesome sounding paper. Hopefully he will still like going to the doctor.

Here he is in his hospital clothes. It had an open back like all hospital gowns.

He was really having fun with the paper.

Waiting for the surgeon.

We didn't get to go with him to have anesthesia or any thing so after this we went straight to the parent waiting room. It was a very nice room with cubicles that you waited in. Chris really liked it because it meant you didn't have to make awkward small talk with people whose children were in surgery. It was just Chris and I sitting and waiting. We waited for about an hour and forty-five minutes. It took a little bit longer than we thought because we didn't think to add in his going under and coming up. By the time we saw him again he was out from under anesthesia. He was still pretty groggy though and was in and out of sleep the whole time we were in recovery, which was good because we weren't allowed to hold him there and he had lots of wires and stuff so him moving wouldn't have been good because he is so strong.
On the way up to his room he kicked of his hospital anklet and one of his wires and tangled up a couple others. Once we got up to his room he mostly just wimpered as they took vitals and gave us instructions even though he hadn't eaten for 7 hours. We tried to feed him but the local anesthetic hadn't worn off so he couldn't move his lips to suck. That really frustrated him. So he did cry a bit then. But Daddy took him and helped him feel better. After that we got him to eat about an ounce of milk using a syringe. He still hasn't been able to breastfeed or bottlefeed. Then Daddy put him to bed.

He is conked out.

They even came in and took his vitals and he didn't wake up.

Chris was pretty tired too after being such a good Dad.

  1. I'm so glad it's over and I'll bet you are too. That's so difficult to wait not knowing and wondering what's going on. I hope he'll be able to heal quickly so his eating won't be disturbed too long. Love you guys and I'll pray for comfort for that cute little guy.
